Rod, Borland has no reason to get into the Javascript business. It's
marginal, it's already well exploited by Netscape [ which has a huge
technology jump on it, so if Borland were to develop their own
Ecmascript-compliant language, it would be a big investment ], and
it has nothing (zero, zip, nil, nada) to do with Java! Javascript
is a cute scripting language, which gets more powerful all the time,
but I don't think it's positioned to be a "shell script for Java".

No, this news is a complete non-issue for Borland. If this had
resulted somehow in Oracle abandoning Borland's tools, then it
would definately mean something.

I mean, why not complain because Borland doesn't have a Web browser, and that's a huge licensing opportunity they are missing out on?

Borland Appoints Zack Urlocker Vice President of Marketing

Names Mark de Visser Vice President of Marketing Communications

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Borland International, Inc. (Nasdaq: BORL - news) today announced the promotion of Zack Urlocker, 35, to vice president of Marketing. Urlocker, who was previously vice president of Product Management, now takes on additional responsibility for all of Borland's worldwide marketing activities including corporate marketing and corporate communications. He reports to Borland Chairman and CEO Delbert W. Yocam.

Urlocker has been with Borland for seven years. Prior to heading product management for all Borland products, he served as director of Delphi Product Management where he was involved in the development and introduction of Delphi, Borland's popular rapid application development environment. Prior to becoming director of Delphi Product Management, Urlocker served as a product manager in Borland's languages group. Urlocker is a contributing editor to Windows Tech Journal and a frequent conference speaker on distributed application development.

''Zack has been instrumental in helping Borland redefine itself as a leading enterprise development solutions provider,'' said Yocam. Prior to joining Borland, Urlocker was the manager of developer relations at The Whitewater Group. Urlocker holds a master's degree in mathematics from University of Waterloo, Canada, and a bachelor's degree in computer science from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He also attended Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.

Borland also announced the promotion of Mark de Visser, 44, to vice president of Marketing Communications. De Visser, who will now report to Urlocker, has responsibility for advertising, collateral, creative services and electronic marketing.

De Visser has worked for Borland since 1987 in a variety of management roles including sales, support, customer service, product management and marketing. Most recently he was worldwide director of Corporate Marketing. De Visser holds a bachelors degree in mathematics from the Technical University of Delft in The Netherlands.
