That the Bible calls Cyrus annointed (the meaning of messiah) because God annointed him to allow the Jerusalem temple to be rebuilt is not a surprise or problem to any student of the Bible. The OT uses the term annointed (messiah) 39 times for a host of individuals, kings, priests, prophets, and of course, for the future messiah (annointed one) to come.
