The scale of a popular air travel website is more complex than a health care site would be. Each person has an account, the system had to be linked with legacy systems, a multitude of car rental, hotel and cruise line systems, with the added complexity of international travel.

They simply did not hire the right people to build it.

I think a little differently on this one point:

Unfortunately, with increasing numbers of people and increasing amounts of diversity in culture and background, it is impossible to control the complexity.

That's not really unfortunate. It's good. That's how life is, and should be. Even people of similar backgrounds are all very different. They like to be free. Otherwise life would be sh*t.

Actually, I'm sure you don't think that's unfortunate. Guess that's just the way the sentence came out... :)
