If you really want to look at the significant ideological debate of this century it will be between dysfunctional democratic governments (ours) vs China. IIRC, they have about 3M of their population which controls all the government, and their government is horribly intrusive, but it also is a government of technocrats. Most of what we value is missing in their system. But it looks like they will hand us our heads in this century. They are doing it from a collective system, while the Tea Party is hell bent on seeing how the ideology of individualism will fare. It will be a very interesting next couple of decades.

But you don't argue against that stuff by talking about "bigger" or "smaller" government. If you want to say, "government shouldn't be doing that," fine, say it, argue it. But the "smaller government" people just scream "we want smaller government". And then they say, We want to save Medicare [by turning it into a voucher program].

"Bigger", "smaller"--that is all just rhetoric. Argue the program you want to kill or transform on its merits. That is something that can be discussed intelligently. Not "bigger" or "smaller"--that is just Norquistian/Frank whathisname demagoguery to appeal to the unthinking masses who read/post on SI or other RW blogs or mass media.

Sam, what do you think Obamacare is if not bigger government?

Well it is not as "bigger govt" as single payer would be and you claim to be for single payer... Obamacare is actually a boost to free market insurance companies

So looks like it's you who is the "extremist" if you want to use that example

Also, govt spending is down under Obama... unfortunately

This repetitive crap about how the left is just as bad or worse than the extreme right really gets old... it's obviously just a smokescreen for conservatives who supported the catastrophes of Raygun and Bush and now want to appear "fair" when it's the social conservative policies that have caused our deficit to skyrocket under Raygun and Bush and always seems to cause economic calamities with their deregulation of the "free market"

when you get on your proverbial high horse you sure like to beat it to death... but you are incorrect as usual
