I appreciate your efforts keeping the score and while I am fine with your proposals I would suggest something simpler (for you) and to just have all stocks start with their 1/11/14 prices regardless of when contestants submit their picks.

I think the other issue was stocks that trade on more than one exchange when there was a significant disparity in price between the two. Again perhaps a simpler rule maybe the exchange price with the highest average volume (or to just not allow stocks whose primary exchange is not a US exchange).

Bulba, I think that pricing based on the closing price on the day submitted would be far simpler, would remove any gaming, and would reflect how things work in real life. Buying the same stock on a different date is really a different investment. I'm not sure why it's necessary to use uniform prices regardless of when 'purchased'. Maybe there are reasons you don't like this approach, but I'm throwing it out there for what it's worth.

I'm in regardless, not a big deal.

Rule 14c: in the event of a tie, the batter who submits their picks on time is to be considered the winner :)

I prefer 12.31 as the starting date for pricing and perhaps 1 week of extra time for laggards.

5% seems like a small move to disqualify a pick.
But hopefully most people get them in before the 1/2 open.

Bulba, I prefer 12/31 for the deadline and no extensions. I think much of our past problems is the uncertainty over the starting dates and once the rule is in place, contestants will adjust. If someone doesn't get their portfolio in on time, well, they can still contribute to the winner's charity, and they'll be better prepared for next year.

But I'm a Marine, and will abide with whatever you declare.

:-)

My suggestions for the contest, with the caveat always being that whatever is the easiest for you, since you have to undertake all the heavy lifting and umpiring by calling the balls and strikes:

1) All price entries should be the closing price on 12/31/13

2) Should a contest entry be bought out, the holder should be given the right to hold proceeds in cash for the duration of the contest, opposed to it being allocated over the balance of their holdings. Assuming the buyout is for a nice premium, one should be allowed to lock in that profit.

3) IMO there are those who wait before placing their entries until the last minute, hoping to glean some good picks from the true gurus on this board. So that all entries are based on self-evaluation, have everyone submit their entries (with set deadline) to you in a PM. The board is well enough known at this time, and I doubt if there are those that will wish to wait until after the contest has started before making their entry, if there is no advantage to waiting. If memory serves me right, over the last few years we’ve had events happening the first week of January that ‘could’ have major impact on various stocks.

I like the idea of being able to submit a bit late, as this encourages other entrants.

But to avoid any advantage to doing so, I propose the following:

Use the higher price of 12/31 or the price on the submission date. So submitting late can only ever hurt you.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I’ll wait a bit more for further suggestions and put together another draft proposal.
Peace & good health,
