OPEC contributed but it was probably only the 2nd biggest reason. The main reason was monetary policy going back for years. Any time unemployment was a bit high the fed opened the spigots.

Oil went from ~ $3 to $30 during Nixon Carter... that's 10 fold increasing, making the latest move look tame by comparison. This was at a time when Oil was more important to inflation... these idiots like Dan Quayle trying to blame Carter are really so ignorant as to be funny. Further, Carter hired Volker, who broke the back of the spiral and stabilized the situation.

Typical wingnut mentality... Carter president, his fault. Too funny... they think presidents are essentially gods.

I take it you are a young person and don't know much about history.
Carter made things worse and worse for his four years ...
that is why he only got one term.
Reagan made things better and better during his two terms . . .
leading to the greatest economic run higher in history . . .
until the dot-comm crash and 911 double-hit.
Carter made things worse and worse in Iran because he did not take a stand.
He was a sympathizer.
Reagan came right in on day one and threatened Iran if they did not return the American hostages.
They were "immediately" released.
Obama today is like Carter 35-years ago . . .
still no answers from Benghazi because Obama is a sympathizer pacifist.

Of course you would claim to believe that exogenous factors caused the misery of the Carter years rather than is policies. Since you claim to believe that OBama has no responsibility for the misery he has inflicted on America, the Middle East and the world you would make similar claims about the second worst President in history.

Iran committed to returning the hostages almost immediately after President Reagan was elected. It would be unreasonable to conclude they viewed him as a stooge like they do Obama or that they viewed him as a patsy like they did Carter.

Carter destabilized the Middle East when he returned the Mullahs to Iran and the world is still paying for his idiocy.
