Hi Jurgis

Corner of Berkshire & Fairfax Message Board

As a backup I paid my one time fee of $20.00 and established a lifetime account on the B&F message boards. I really have not spent much time at that site, as I have found it a bit of a challenge to navigate their forums. Using the "search" function, I really do not find many of the stocks I follow. What is nice about SI, I can use their global search feature and find some pretty good recent discussion on the stocks I follow. They usually uncover recent posts on this Value thread and some reasons I might want to re-think my buys and/or sells.

For me, it has to do with the content and posts that contain some well thought out ideas and/or value propositions. The posts that I have read on B&F message boards are quite good and generally are worth reading too.

I also find that GuruFocus.com to be pretty good. They have a forum section there but I have not spent much time searching that section. I do find their site far superior to SI in tracking Guru's buys & sells, following the known value managers and tracking my buys/sells against these Gurus.

FWIW, I spent a lot of last year putting together a basket of undervalued MLP's. I am looking for both income and growth. For me, it was (and continues) to be an education since you have to look at more of the basic fundamental value in assets owned, projects in development, current & future cash flows, and choose from many of the different sectors these company operate in. It now consists of 19 MLP's that generate a blended return of 7% from current distributions and over 18 months another 6% unrecognized long term capital gains. My goal is a combined annual return of 10%. I want to build that component of the taxable portfolio to 35%-40% but so far it's only represents 22% of my taxable portfolio. I have built a Google spreadsheet that I will post when completed. The challenge is to add to those positions that are undervalued, peel off shares (including paying the capital gains tax) when under performing and/or over valued and replacing those positions to increase my monthly/annual income.

I have learned a lot from the different members in this forum as well as from two or three other SI boards. Their feedback and/or picks have helped me focus on my picks. The benefit for me is that over the years I have come to know many of the posters who present interesting buy/sell arguments rather than just being a cheerleader for their stocks.

I have been swayed from an opinion by thoughtful intelligent posts which allowed me to re-think my buys/sells. That is what I find helpful in these and other forums.

EKS

My vote for a shelter, if SI hits the skids, would be cornerofberkshireandfairfax. The reason I prefer it over others is that it is already a community if value investors, and a lot of very capable folks are already there (bloggers like oddballstocks for example). Of course we could go pretty much anywhere, but if i had to choose a place, it would be within a like minded community like cornerofberkshireandfairfax.

As for fool.com, I have a handle there (same name) , but i do not find too many likeminded posters there, so i gave up on it 10 years ago or so, when they became more and more commercial. There is investorsvillage.com too, which has some decent boards, but the website is unreliable and run by a one man show (Blue kid or so) and could fold at any time.
