That is a phenomenal price when you consider that GV has just
announced they will support all existing 56K modems with a free
upgrade to ITU standard next year, since all the products are
supposed to be firmware upgradeable by software download.

I wonder if someone at ISN decided to flush these not realizing
they are upgradeable and supported; or if this particular product
is in fact an exception that is not upgradeable; or if these are
not completely new products. I have not seen similar price anywhere
else for this, has anyone else?

Well, if GVIL could make a profit at the $49.95 price it would great, but I doubt it. All of the $49.95 modems sold out immediately, when I had checked earlier today there were 209 internals and 348 externals on hand, now there are none.

Dale:

I looked at the site. It looks like a typo. The external 56k modem is at $148.

Dale -- I think this is more channel clearing than anything. I think they just want to get rid of the inventory to prep for January's standard. By the way -- the $49 deal at CompUSA that I got included Newscatcher. The one at ISN does not. So it just looks like they are trying to clear out the boxes...

Contacted GVIL's sales via the web on the $49 modems. Interesting response, though they didn't answer all my questions...

Hello Richard,
No we are not going out of the PC business what we are trying to do is get
into the PC business. If we price our product at an unbeatable price than
people will try us and once they find out that we are the best they will
continue to buy our products thus we all prosper. We are comming out in the
number one place in most computer magazines for having the best product in
the market place. What better way to get our potential customers to try our
products.

Thanks,

Sylvia Harris
