I know the apparent simplicity of the flat tax sounds fair and appealing but it is highly regressive. 10% of a homeless guy's income is a lot more than 10% of a billionaire's in terms of personal impact. A progressive tax that crosses zero at the poverty line and goes to 15% at infinity is just as easy to calculate (15% of anything over poverty line) is far, far, far more equitable. For most people this would be a tax cut. If you are making 2x the poverty line you pay 7.5%. 3x the poverty line you pay 10%, etc. There is a whole cadre of people who would hate this though (H&R Block and all other private tax preparers).

really?

someone making only $5000 per year should pay income taxes??

wow, i thought only libertarians and the plutocrats were for a flat tax since it is so regressive

anyone in the upper tax bracket of 39% should be glad they are there and not bitch about paying more

seems ridiculous to me those living in poverty should be subject to a tax

Bobby Jindal tried to eliminate the state income tax here and make up for it with increasing the sales tax

more regressive taxation that favors the wealthy... even the state republicans were against that, so that was the end of that idea

really surprised you are for taxation that favors the wealthy, when the disparity is at all time highs... yeah i agree about eliminating all the loopholes but still a flat tax favors the wealthy... especially only 10%... wow, that's not even a decent tip

I'm all for a flat tax, on all and any sort of income, if it STARTS above what constitutes a living yearly income for a single person, a married couple and those with (x) number of children - which would all be different numbers. Then, it would be fair.

Because you, I and the Koch brothers all need the same essentials to survive. But as you say, the wealthy greedheads, who live in America, yet don't pay their fair share, would never allow it.

well, ironically enough, Steve lokness is more a liberal or progressive than you on that issue

ouch

i think he is for a flat tax but puts a demarcation line at certain low income threshold

apparently you are more in line with Herman Cain, aka Mr 999... ouch again

Even guys live Steve Forbes who have been proposing a flat tax for decades now have proposed a 15% rate, starting I think at around $25,000 or so. Adjusted for inflation, that starting point might be between $30 and 35k now.
