Because the families value science, and push their kids in to the sciences, they reap the results of that. We have a society of morons who are afraid of science, and scientists, and the "liberal elites" who will corrupt them if they go to college. All the Asian nations value science- maybe even a little too much, and at the expense of everything else- but they really value education and science. If families here valued education and science, we'd have similar successes with "our" kids. Let's see families pony up for tutoring on Saturdays- the way Asian parents do. Let's see families cut out the sports, and force their kids to study for long hours in the evenings. That's the Asian way.

<<But OUR kids aren't prepared compared to the rest of the world. So they send their kids here, we educate them, and they return.>.

All of my clan and all of our friends got damn fine educations compared to anyone on earth and all in our public school system.

So I have no idea what you are talking about. And at clan gatherings no one ever talks about how bad our public schools are, only about how much they are underfunded.

About half my clan are scientists, and half are lawyers, and damn fine ones. Two are university professors.

All public school. And we all send the grand kids to public schools, to get the best education possible.

And remember education is what we all value most. We are fanatics about it.

And we choose public schools as the best schools!

UC Berkeley (public school) is as fine a university as any one earth!
