All (slightly off-topic):

There was an interesting article in the 12/8/97 Business Week about the advances in crank-operated flashlights and radios. The crank winds up a spring that turns a generator for power. Radios with the crank can "play at a consistent volume and quality with no power surges for about an hour at a time."

The really interesting part was buried in the last paragraph: "BayGen has more in store. It's working on cellular phones and has even powered a low-tech computer for 20 minutes via a crank." There were no other details, but I found the possible elimination of batteries from cell phones and laptops fascinating.

My information came from an article in the WSJ, I have never seen the actual text of the letter. Compaq's intent (Netscape in addition to IE vs. instead of IE) was unclear, but the WSJ article made it quite clear that MS would not accept either position. I agree with the Justice Dept. that for MS to prohibit EITHER action would be both anti-competitive and a violation of antitrust. Apparently, the judge feels that way also.

Derec, <If I were microsoft, I would oppose any of my component be
REPLACED(not in addition) at the point of SALE simplely because you must sale my product as is. It is up to the customer to decide..>

COMPAQ is the CUSTOMER, they bought the product from MS, and must be free to do whatever they want at THEIR point of sale. You would be correct in case if you buy the shrink-wrapped MS box off the shelf.
Big difference, IMHO.
