The point isn't almonds vs. tomatoes. The point is that ag has to pay its way and charge accordingly. Then, supply and demand will take over.

Many years ago we grew tomatoes and we got out of it because there wasn't enough money in it. Probably because CA was subsidizing its tomato growers by giving them cheap water (we had to pay for ours as we didn't have a well on the farm).

I can guarantee you when you're auctioning your daily pick it is supply and demand in its purest form.

What an idiot: a Valley that's heavily dependent on irrigated water - provided by big government infrastructure projects.

what was once a mighty river becomes an inconsistent stream because of all the water that is drained from it by the states of CA, NV, UT and AZ.

No mention of the big government dams that Rachel Maddow likes to brag about.

The US can't afford to lose the SJ Valley because of all the food it produces

The rest of America could get by just fine w/o California grapes or almonds. Californians are so myopic. They don't know there are farms all over the country. Wipe out CA produce and the farmers of America will gear up and replace it in a year.

There is not enough water for even the least water demanding crops........and trust, this nation is far more dependent on tomatoes than almonds.

I can't remember ever buying almonds. Tomatoes grow anywhere.

Its the lack of gov't intervention during the SJ Valley's development that has gotten us into this mess.

It was government intervention that MADE the SJ Valley's development.
