I understand your point of view.
The propensity for Apple to make money on the memory is just too much. But I look at it as paying them for the OS, which is worth it. I expect to see the same sort of thing on SSDs in the future.

I don't know, but I can imagine that minimizing user expansions improves reliability. The only time I've had problems with a Mac were when the memory I got was lousy; once the mfr. replaced it I was fine.
I bought a MacBook Pro a few months ago, the low-end one, it has 8GB and an SSD, and I cannot find one thing I'd change about it. I can imagine I'll still be using it for several years which is about all one can ask.

I did spend time and money to max out the RAM on my iMac which didn't do anything for me. I upgraded RAM anticipating that LogicPro would run a lot faster and better but it doesn't. It barely uses 25% of my ram and instead swaps out a huge amount. And on occasion it locks up and dies. RIDICULOUS.
I had similar problems with using Preview to view huge PDFs when the OS was Mavericks and later Yosemite. My 16 GB MacBook Pro was slower than a dog when using Preview. For El Capitan, Apple began using their own Metal instead of Open GL for Preview's graphics and now Preview works great. I wonder, maybe Logic Pro uses the graphic processor too? If so, there is a major improvement in OS X 10.11.
