Due to the strength of the Catholic Church? No way, Italy is all open over the weekends and don't tell me, the Church is any weaker there! No, the unions rule Germany. Sweden? First country besides Spain to abolish any laws regulating store hours and that was done by the Social Democrats back in the 1950s, which back then made Sweden the only European country besides Spain void of any store closing law regulations. Actually Sweden traditionally is very much like the US in so many ways in spite of the 'reputation' of being the almost commie socialist's paradise. A reputation these days seemingly taken over by Denmark. As for the standard of living, that very much is up to how you define it. In Denmark the car taxation is pretty much like 100-130% ON TOP OF THE NET PRICE of the car! Similar in Norway, actually... But then again, almost everybody own their home and there live like a count! Sweden, the standard of living has always been very high, the choice of any kind of products from anywhere in the world - unlimited! The nature available to everybody to explore, private or not, enormous! Taxes used to be high but got reduce a lot like 25 years ago under a non socialistic leadership..I could go on. Well, the so called 'fugitive' home made problem is threatening all of thus recently and it remains to be seen how Sweden, like the rest of Europe deal with this. Which reminds me about the 6,000 Cuban 'fugitives' now stranded in South America ready to rush into the US now, when the Cubans believe this window of opportunity might soon close as a result of the Obama/Castro love story developing... /Taro
