ANALYSIS/ Weak Chip Market Sends Silicon Wafer Prices Lower (1)

Nikkei English News via Individual Inc. : (Nikkei Industrial Daily, Dec. 25, 1997)

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Prices of silicon wafers continue to spiral downward as lower DRAM and microprocessor prices force chip makers to cut production. While only a small percent is spent on silicon wafers in chip production, cost-conscious chip makers are adamant in their demands that prices be cut.

Price negotiations between silicon wafer producers and larger-lot customers settled at a 12% cut for the fiscal last half, the third straight half year of declines. Under the new agreement, a positive type polished wafer with a diameter of 200mm will go for 11,000-13,000 yen and a high-value added epitaxial wafer of the same size for 17,000-19,000 yen, both 2,000 yen less than the first fiscal half.

Chipmakers such as NEC Corp. and Toshiba Corp. have been asking for price cuts citing the worsening DRAM market. In fact, the domestic spot price of one 16-megabit DRAM has plunged to 300 yen, one-third last December's level.

Mitsubishi Materials Corp., Shin-Etsu Handotai Co. and other wafer makers initially were opposed to slashing prices, but eventually gave in. Many market observers are pessimistic, predicting less demand for the January-March quarter than that of the same period last year.

Meanwhile wafer makers believe their salvation lies in the development of a 300mm wafer. Profits reaped from the development of cutting edge technology should more than offset the paper-thin margin from the 200mm diameter wafer. (More)
