"Today life is much more civilized and humane..."

If you don't think about the previous century. I just watched a doco that included a brief mention of the firebombing of Dresden. About 30,000 people incinerated in one night. That's just one small episode in a catalogue of horrors. The Nazis killed millions (as did Stalin and Mao), and Germany would have been considered one of the most civilised countries. We definitely have made great progress in our ability to destroy things and people.

I don't see much evidence that much has changed outside of the developed world. If Shakespeare were transported to the present day, he might marvel at the technology but I am confident he would say "people haven't changed".
