<<<<< More kids are killed getting to and from school. More kids are killed by lead paint.>>>>>

Ya, but we banned led paint and do you know how many billions of dollars are spent to MAKE cars safe.

That is exactly what I have in mind. It is yet another example of the totemization of guns. That the very idea of examining the role of guns in anything is totally off limits. That, if anything, we must make rights central to the way we organize our public lives and accommodate the wishes of gun owners to the exclusion of all else. At this rate, we are going to recognize the fact that gun owners are a declining percentage of the population as a "crisis" and mobilize the country to address. I hope that is an exaggeration, but we certainly are trending that way...

I mean, the declining use of coal for economic reasons has been identified as a "crisis" that we have to address by throwing out regulations that control the dangers to people and the environment. That it is worth accepting the higher mortality rate and long term ecological damage that it can inflict to coddle the industry. So it isn't far-fetched to consider that a similar thing might be done with respect to guns.

I entered the discussion at the point where Gun owner rights were claimed to trump everyone else's rights. ... and I asked twice politely for an explanation: "It would be nice if could you first explain which are rights everyone has that have been trumped by gun owners."

I did not get an explanation.

CJ likes to tag me (and others) with a position which he can rant against, whether or not the position is properly held. Then he goes all over the map with parodies and insults for the created straw man. I've no interest in such nonsense.

I do not know what, if anything, should be done about guns. I consider the problem a human problem not a weapons problem.

>>>"We are blasé when it comes to some risks and frantic when it comes to others. I think that's irrational if not insane."<<<

Agree with your bottom line.

>> I made a crack in a post to i-node yesterday about the red team's aversion to intended life-saving regulation by EPA.

Sorry, I missed that.

>> Turning schools into bunkers seems excessive, downright irrational, to me.

That would be insane.

But so is allowing your kids to attend a place that is totally without security, after children have been attacked numerous times in that environment.
