In addition to any doubt about the statistics showing the correlation, this is a prime case of remembering that correlation does not equal causation. Someone in a situation where they might be at risk to be shot, is much more likely to want to have a gun.

Yeah, numerous paragraphs flagged as "Important!" in the Intro to Statistics there...

But how does that explain why Republicans are dead set against studying gun violence? What we need is good data on all gun related incidents, but Republicans have steadfastly stonewalled any such studies. There is a reason...

It is even more likely that those in situations of risk are there because of other guns...

Correct. Correlation does not equal causation. But it does give some possible mechanisms. And, in combination with other data, can eventually prove a causation. Which is generally how causation winds up being proven.

In this case we know, for example, that when guns are restricted, not only does the suicide rate with guns goes down, so does the overall suicide rate. We also know that the assaults with guns in domestic disputes goes down. While the overall rate of domestic disputes seems unaffected, the mortality rate goes down. So a causative factor in the original statistic being guns does seem to have some support.

So your little fan dance trying to throw doubt, fails.
