Kate, you are all over the place. No one in the region wants China to "police the region" China is already building islands that will serve as naval and air bases so that they can claim the South China Sea for themselves. Why do Rs want Japan to build their military force? Not to mention all sorts of other powers? It must be so that the US defense contractors can build their businesses. It is actually better for the US to be the leading military power in a largely demilitarized world. Even if that means we have to have a large military budget, although frankly my guess is that the current budget is too large even under those conditions. As for Canada dropping their dairy tariffs--they'll do that when the US drops its dairy subsidies. You act like all of this stuff can be done in a flash. Like there aren't sunk costs and vested interests involved in everything in all of the involved countries. It is all very tricky. Trump already got rid of TPP, which was eliminating thousands of tariffs across all of the signee countries and which took years to negotiate. It was idiotic. It was the result of him not having a clue what was going on. And, no offense, but your posts show that you don't have a clue about this stuff either. As do the posts of all of the Trumpsters on this thread and LB's. You guys are taking a victory lap over this summit before anything real has been done! Well, other than things like Kim getting Trump to get rid of military exercises that he didn't like. Incredible!

Yes, they have been removed. But we regularly overfly with armed bombers and there are the submarines. Not to mention, there is pressure to put nuclear weapons back in South Korea.

China and Japan together can police the region. Without the US, China will own the seas in that part of the world. They have made huge strides in doing so, much to most of those countries there horror. As to Japan, most of those countries remember what happened the last time Japan did that. They welcome Japan even less than they welcome China. Given what Japan did in China, the idea of them doing anything together is a non-starter. Do you realize that the Nazi ambassador to Japan complained about the brutality of the Japanese in Nanking? Roll that one over in your mind. Nazis complaining about Japan being too brutal... Admittedly, the throwing babies up in the air and catching them on bayonets was a little over the top. They even photographed it. You can find some of those photos on the Internet. And then, of course, there was the "comfort women". They weren't only Chinese or Korean, BTW.
