I once calculated the value of USD printing press to be $500B/yr (that was about 10 years ago, so it should be higher now). A friend of mine calculated the value using a different method and came up with the same number. The single biggest reason for US debt being denominated in USD is petrodollars. Which is all to say that the US will go to great length (stopping just short of a hot war with China) to prevent the scenario you describe.
