BTW, as of now, Trump is more popular than either Reagan or Carter were in their terms and only marginally worse than Bill Clinton. I'd hardly call that, "absurdly low popularity numbers."

Furthermore, a leader with a smaller but highly passionate supporters often beats one with a larger but less dedicated followers. So choosing a ho-hum centrist is not going to get you anywhere. If you want to win, find someone who can fire up his base.
