Do you have good air filtration in your house? Hepa or Ulpa filtration will help quite a lot.

Winn's right.. HEPA filtration will help. They make free standing units that are mobile and you can put in a room or central area (much like a heater) and they circulate the air through taking out particulates. Smoke particles are pretty small...less than a micron. HEPA's will work down to the 0.3 micron range or so, from what I've seen advertised...though never bought one for the house here. We've used them in aerosol test lab setups.

I'm sure you know about all about filtration with your background in semi's..

Stuff is nasty. We've been on the east side of a few major fires and had smoke for several days. Gets to your respiratory system a bit after awhile.
