"The homeless problem is a HUGE deal in California"
Yup.

"We can't build our way out of the housing crisis"
Yup.

"Why can't we spend a bit of that budget on new mental health treatment centers?"
That's a good question. Also more homeless shelters, drug rehab programs, family reunification for people with families, help from the VA for homeless vets, bus tickets back to the states sending us their homeless, and RV parks for those living in their vehicles.

" Gov. Newsom is trying to force local cities to build more houses"
Does he know land prices in the Bay Area? How about SF building some homes in Stockton? SJ can build some in Los Banos, and LA can use Bakersfield. Yeah, right.

"I blame YOU for blocking real solutions to these problems."
So far, I haven't tried to block anything. OTH, Message 32336171

We can't build our way out of the housing crisis because it takes 10 fuckin' years just to overcome all the regulatory hurdles and the legal challenges from the NIMBY crowd

All we need are more regulations...

A few months back someone posted on our neighborhood elist their tale if woe regarding the construction of an in-law unit in their backyard. Suffice it to say it took three years to build and cost ~$600k! The permits/etc. were over $100k! In much of flyover country you can buy a house for $100k. And most Californians think this is normal. UFB!
