Since they really don't know much of anything about the virus yet, (some say they have still yet to really isolate it) here are a couple of possibilities. Viruses are usually parts of the anatomy specific. Perhaps the virus is a blood virus and attacks hemoglobin. This would start in the lungs, as hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. Low levels of oxygen can cause failures of all organs.

Or by attacking the lungs in general as it was originally thought to do, this would affect oxygen levels which could then possibly lead to other organs failing.(thus the new observations that symptoms resemble high altitude sickness and treatment should be accordingly). Heart, brain (neurological), kidneys, etc. I have emphysema for example, and this is a danger that I have to face. Organ failure is what usually kills emphysema patients.and if my oxygen levels get too low, I can feel problems developing with my heart. Thankfully, my family has always had very strong hearts (no heart attacks in my family) and a hit of Ventolin (Albuterol) takes care of the problem.

Or possibly they are misinterpreting what is happening. They are counting any death as a Covid death where the genetic materiel is found in the patient that has expired (or even is ASSUMED to be present) . Random testing is now showing that up to 15% of the population in the world carries this genetic material whether they are showing disease symptoms or not. Perhaps these patients are not dying of the virus, but of something else and it is assumed the virus was the cause.

Everything is sheer speculation at this point. And it will likely be years before they truly understand this virus.

Would people have any way to measure they were not getting enough O2 besides one of those finger pulse-ox meters?
The fact that you have a lot of people walking around with low o2 levels that are asymptomatic - I suspect in several months we will start seeing more and more people with mild neurological deficits.
I wish we had the testing capacity to have any of us who had a very bad cold or flu since November get a test to see if we had it then they could add our data to the database.
A lot of attention is given to mortality numbers and transmissibity, but it's starting to look like survivors may have more lingering effects than we realize.
I went and looked at my exercise record and I didn't do yoga for most of December because of heavy coughing and thinking it was a mild flu so I didn't want to spread it to my yoga class... but I was able to hike most of the month fine with less than a week of total rest where the Costco Severe Cold meds worked great and I never got a fever. I heard on TV that taking acetaminophen is a way to pass the fever checks... as it can lower a fever. I had a mild "rebound" in Feb and still have a bit of lingering something that can feel better with a cough in the mornings but it doesn't force me to cough. Others I interact with have had a similar experience. Odd...

Clearly we were foolish to increase the military budget by $57B rather than put that money to H&HS to be prepared... hopefully something good comes out of this where the World realizes killing people with weapons over interpretation of who's god that doesn't give a shit who she kills with Covid-19 is at best foolish. We need to work together for better health.
