Kite surfing is easier on the body than windsurfing ONCE YOU LEARN.

Learning is the tough part as it can kill you learning to launch.

Landing in the water strapped to a kite board is a quick way to snap a leg too. There is a lot of jerking out of the water and dropping back in while learning where you catch and edge and snap your leg. One younger windsurfing friend (PhD VC if it matters) broke his leg on his first kite lesson and his wife said he has to stick to windsurfing so he can raise their two young daughters!

Of course many of us have broken legs windsurfing - I have three screws in my leg making it stronger than before like Steve Austin!

Many of my windsurfing friends switched to kiting because the chop is too hard on their knees with windsurfing and easier with kiting. Kiting is also much, much easier to learn just like learning to snow board has a much steeper learning curve than learning to ski.

The speed records are sort of phony since they are set with both windsurfing and kite gear that doesn't go upwind. Scary fast.... over 50 km/hr I think is the record for both and easy of course to get hurt. I have female friends that as sponsored speed sailors, one for kite and one for windsurfing... it helps a lot that they are drop dead gorgeous so they get lots of followers and look good in before and after gear.
