Yes you can even stretch to weekly, but daily is reportedly better to maintain a constant level (determined by your 25 hydroxy blood test of course). And BTW it's advisable to take it with something containing a little fat (my home-made full fat yogurt for breakfast).

Just an FYI for any of you concerned about artery calcifications. Add Life Extensions Super K which facilitates the Vitamin D depositing calcium into hard tissues (bones and teeth) instead of in your blood and soft tissues like arteries.

If you're attempting to adjust your 25 hydroxy levels, it may take some experimentation to do so. The increase in ng/ml is quite non-linear versus supplementation levels (somewhere there is a graph which I cannot find at the moment). The following website looks reasonably current with respect to suggested levels but I believe the current toxicity level is >150 ng/dl instead of 100 as they report. Also do not confuse the two different metrics (ng/dl vs nmol/L). The former is how lab results in the US are reported versus the latter which is used in Europe. nmol/L is 2.5 times the ng/dl level. This website also has an estimation tool (which IMHO is too complex for most folks including lazy me). I determined my needs empirically by experimentation (for both light and dark months).

Here's a good overview about Vitamin D including a short video by Dr. Oz. Certainly sun exposure is the best way of getting your Vitamin D but I've had problems with pre-cancerous skin lesions. I also hate sunscreen so I tried wearing SPF clothing in our brilliant summer sun (when I'm outside a lot). However a hat, long sleeve shirts and long pants are NOT comfortable in our hot and humid North Carolina summers. I then discovered another supplement that I use as an alternative to sun screen. It's Astaxanthin which is a good antioxidant in addition to being a natural sunscreen. I'm outside a lot, wear only T-shirts and shorts and I have NOT had any sunburns in about 10 years since taking Astaxanthin (6 mg).

Why wouldn't you take a lower dosage?

First, I am not a doctor or expert in human biology so this is only my first hand experience.

I responded to Bob because he apparently already has 5000 IU Vitamin D in hand. This is a high dosage, enough so that my blood tests showed my D levels were too high when I took that dosage. My doctor told me to stop taking it, but I reduced my dosage instead of stopping D. I take 2000 IU (50 mcg) softgels. Twice a day in winter because there is little sun exposure in Oregon during the rainy season. I take one a day for about half the year (the good part in Oregon) - when I spend time in the garden and on the tennis courts, etc.

Supplements which are an oil are in a fat form. I have read that fats are absorbed in body fat tissue and slowly released, so one can mitigate the high dosage by taking every other day. Not sure that works well if you try once of twice a week because the levels in your body probably swing a lot. Also not sure what slowly released means in terms of how much and how long.

Might be good questions for your next doctor visit. You should get better information there instead of on a stock message board.
