I've been taking vitamin D3 for years. Varying amounts according to what I would read by people whom I believed knew more about a correct/wise dosage than I. I was a few years without a D3 blood test and was taking 7500 iu daily. With a physical coming up over a year ago I requested the D3 be included in the workup. My number came back 104 and the doctor got excited. According to what I believed at the time, that number didn't alarm me in the slightest. But, just to assure the doctor that I was cooperative and knowing if I dropped my number below 100 he would stay off my case, I cut back to 5000 iu daily. Blood work a few months later produced an 82 number, which is okay with me and makes the doc happy.

There are people on SI who regularly take far more than 10,000 iu daily, and have for years. They claim many positive health results as a benefit. Of course, there are also many who pooh-pooh those claims. I do believe the medical recommendation of some 400 iu daily for an adult is about as beneficial as a gum drop.

As they say.... "Your mileage may vary."

Bob:

I've found LindyBill's board to be a wealth of health information. In the header you'll find info and links for D-3 supplement.

Subject 57520

In my experience I take 1 to 2 5,000 unit gel caps per day. [5'7" 145 lbs, age 65]

2 years ago when I was steady at 10,000 units my hydroxy 125 was mid 140's level. My MD was a tad unhappy so I stopped for 3 months then started at 5,000 units.

Last year my hydroxy level was down to mid 80's and my MD was fine with this level. Since the 1st of this year I've upped it to the 10,000 due to Covid concerns.

I'm in CT and if Spring / Summer ever arrives so I'm back in sunshine I'll drop back to 5,000 units.

Note I've read the body doesn't absorb Vitamin D from normal vitamins is needs to be gel.

My main reason for the D-3 is more to help with the arteries and colon.

Good luck.
