Deaths per million have a lot of variation that makes them hard to compare across countries. Sweden's rate is between Netherlands and France's, both of whom have lockdowns in place.

What I am saying is that it is not true that Sweden did not follow social distancing - they just took a lighter approach to it that fit their social make up better. If I choose to lighten up my meals and eat mostly Mediterranean fish and salad, I am still on a diet even though I am not starving myself like some people do.

If you are looking for a success story, look at Australia. Geographically they are about the same size as the US and their major cities have about the same population density and an average American city. What is more, they have close ties to China and have much greater social interaction with them. Nonetheless through proactive measures they have one of lowest rates (both contagion and mortality) than anywhere.
