Mark, I'd like to run my money market fund against PTEC this year (just kidding).

Thanks for doing the contest. Even if PTEC stock doesn't do anything, at least we'll have some entertainment. Make sure you include Mark from Florida. I think he had one or two of the biggest winners last year.

Mark,
Having done so well last year with my pick of BBTK, which was down some 65 %, I hesitate to enter INTC @ 80 1/4, and a short of IBM @ 97 1/2. If you will not accept a short, then I will submit ALTR which is currently trading at 30 5/8. All three of these picks I have written about extensively and all three are selected based on price over reactions of the market.

--Intel, I believe will continue to recover and surpass new highs by the end of the year. As we approach the Merced introduction and an array of new network products, earnings growth should become more evident.

--IBM has been up more than 50 % since last March despite the fact that the company continues to demonstrate significantly deteriorating fundamentals.

--Altera has just been beaten down too low. It is the premiere company in the manufacture of PLDs (Programmable Logic Device) chips and is suffering because of the Asian crisis, but is very strong looking longer term.
Regards,
Jules

Mark, If you please, I'll enter ADPT (Adaptec) and CS (Cabletron). I like a good company that's down & it worked for me on DEC last year.

Adaptec ADPT @ 22 1/2 - Owns the SCSI market which may or may not be all that important by itself but is also the leader in I/O. In addition, they have adapters for Fibre/Satellite/Ether & Giga/ATM & are big into Firewire (1394 offhand?) which I think will be increasingly important w/increasing multimedia peripherals. They also own the best CD/DVD packet writing recording software on the Windows and Mac fronts.
P/E on last 12 mths is 12.5 & 3Xbook. Yr high 54 1/2, yr low 19 1/2

Cabletron CS @ 13 1/2 - Beat up networking competitor with CSCO & Bay. Recently got a steal of a deal buying DEC's networking stuff with largely product discount payments. DEC channel deal expected to add significantly in first year.
P/E on last 12 mths is 8.7 & 1.7Xbook. Yr high 46 1/2, yr low in 12's

regards,
Tom

OK, count me in !! I believe I was fortunate enough to have the top 2 "picks" in last year's contest (DIIG & WNDR); however, I was also unfortunate enough to own shares of SYSF and BBTK...If only I had stuck to buying the stocks I was recommending others buy !!!!

I'll go with

1) TSEMF--Tower Semiconductor...Israeli-based independent "foundry" manufacturer of semiconductor integrated circuits...over $6/share cash, over $12/share book value...stock is around 9 1/2, PE is around 7. Stock has been beaten up over their forward-looking statements for the next 6 months (some orders cancelled, etc), but stock is way undervalued here (IMO).

2) PWAV--Powerwave...PWAV designs, manufactures and markets ultra-linear radio frequency power amplifiers for use in the wireless
communications market. The Co's. amplifiers increase the signal strength of wireless transmissions while reducing interference....approx $4/share in cash...P/E of 11...history of torrid growth in sales/income....beaten-up because most of their business is in Korea...recently deals with Nokia/Nortel may help decrease their exposure to Korea...stock starting to rebound...if it goes up too much before Feb 3, I may replace it with another stock.

I'll also throw out 1 more...if you only want 2, leave this one off, unless I replace PWAV with it before Feb 3:

3) CNXS--CNS, Inc.--CNS, Inc. designs, manufactures and markets Breathe Right nasal strip, a decongestant. CNS also markets certain new medical consumer products that are in various stages of marketing and testing. They are basically a 1-product company, the funny "nose-bandaids" that athletes (and others) wear...sales have been fairly flat domestically, way down internationally because they stuffed the channel last year. Company is still very profitable and undervalued here...a likely takeover candidate if their new products don't take off...Someone like a Johnson & Johnson could be interested...Stock around $6....approx $3.50/share cash and $4.50/share book value.

And, by the way, although these are not my "picks", I think we should include INTC and SYSF in the contest by default along with PTEC.

GO TSEMF !!!!
GO PWAV !!!!
GO CNXS !!!!

(but wait 'til Feb 3) <g>

Mark.

I would like to second the vote on Cabletron Systems. I have been long the stock several times and think at this level it could really move up.

I would also like to enter American Power Conversion (APPC). They make power units for PC's and servers. If the power goes out you still have time to shut down your PC. Also protects from brown outs, lighting, bad power sources, ect.. Stock has a PE of 19, a 52 week low of 15 3/4 and a high of 34 3/8. They beat earnings last time.

Hi Mark and everyone,

I'm not sure if I have 3 messages on this board in the past year but I think I do. I've held PTEC since '95 and read every post on this thread. If you don't have too many picks already, I'm eligible, and my picks are eligible I would like to participate.

NETA - Network Associates - McAfee (highest margins in the software business) and Network General merged together recently to form NETA. NETA makes a range of software including virus scan products competing with Symantec. I believe the combined company under McAfee management will make this merger a good deal and add value to the company as well as the stock price.

SANM - Sanmina - Makes quick turn printed circuit boards and does some assembly. Recently merged with Elexsys a smaller similar company. Sames story as above, I believe economies of scale will add value.

Chris
