I'd say that it is a cycle between HW and SW. Software cannot innovate and bring in new things until HW that supports those innovations becomes common. Just look at your cell phone. You could not have Uber if you didn't have enough phones with GPS and reliable data plans. So HW has to come first. Then as HW matures, we play the frog leap game where you need new HW to run the latest SW. Then SW matures and you don't see much reason to upgrade your SW either...until a new paradigm emerges. I think the next wave will be IOT. Right now it is in early HW stages. Eventually it will move into a SW stage.

On a related note, factor analysis tells you that from the market perspective, what business your company is in is completely immaterial and all that matters are the underlying factors. The shifting leadership is simply a reflection of the shifting factors as each business and technology cycle progresses.
