I saw a documentary on Genghis Kahn and the Mongolian invasion. Brutal and savage doesn't even begin to describe it. He personally raped so many women that it's estimated that somewhere between 1 in 50 to 1 in 200 people in the world today are his descendants! And that is to say nothing of the rape and pillaging by his army. 10 years after he conquered Beijing, visitors still reported the streets were greasy from the burnt human flesh. He killed some 40 million people in China and Persia and starved countless more. Which makes WWII seem mild in comparison.

What we need as a species is an appreciation of how our own survival and prosperity is linked to that of everyone (and every thing) else. Peace and order does more for our long-term success than any immediate gains.

And importantly, we need prosperity for all, even if they seem undeserving of it. The reason that the moguls were so brutal in their conquests was that wife stealing, rape, thievery, and murder were widely and openly practiced... Sometimes even within the same family. You cannot expect a people to treat you any better than they treat themselves. This is the best argument for spreading human rights.
