The Constitution is clear: "The president . . . shall be *removed from office* on impeachment . . . and conviction". It also requires that "judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal *and* disqualification". In other words, the whole purpose of the impeachment provisions of the Constitution are to remove a sitting president from office and (not or) to disqualify him. There is nothing in the Constitution allowing a simple disqualification of a President whose term in office expired before a judgment of conviction in the Senate. In fact, the use of the word "and" in defining what the judgment may provide for makes the whole thing a silly, clownish spectacle. Oh, and it is very, very bad politics for the Dems to go after a President who is no longer sitting. Didn't Blunderin' Joe Biden say something about 'healing and unification', blah, blah?
