To say that Intel has challenges ahead is an understatement. I've been saying that the move towards cloud is bad for Intel and it has played out exactly as I expected it. Both Amazon and Alibaba said they are coming up with more chips for their cloud centers. This revenue that will be taken out of Intel's datacenter sales.

Good article. Matches what I heard on CNBC interviews.

I think becoming a foundry will restore Intel to leadership eventually. As a former IC designer, you always get better performance out of chips if you can have some say in how they are manufactured to meet specific needs. That comes better inhouse with huge volume. Intel has its Altera business that used TSMC and I assume still does, so they have an idea of how much margin they regain by bringing that business inhouse.

My biggest fear is the "we're here to help as long as you follow all sorts of social rules and kiss our rings" government "leaders" cough... cough... understand that chips left the US for lower taxes and lower labor (including environmental) costs. Labor has caught up in China for top engineers to build these so the costs are now mostly what the governments will pay or forgive to get the business. Trump understood this but I don't think the democrats have it in their DNA to get a clue about this.
