Funny thing, I never heard this reported in the mainstream press just as his letter to the ROTC colonel, explaining why he was reneging on his promise to come back to the states and join the ROTC, stating how he "loathed" the military was never reprinted.

The letter to the colonel was cited all over the place. The supposed quote from Reliable Roger was not. Can this perhaps be because the story wasn't true? How quickly we all leap to believe what we wish to believe.

I wonder if the press would have cut a Republican candidate the same slack?

They certainly would. They did with Reagan. The guy was out to lunch for much of his second term. Wouldn't give press conferences, never made unscripted appearances (with the exception of a few disasters). Did the press raise serious questions about his mental capability? No. Now THAT'S scary.
