For Tesla to change to the open system, the stars have to align perfectly. Firstly, at this time that is not a model that anyone, whether big ICE or new EV automakers want to join. So time needs to pass for them to realize the futility of trying to make it all on their own. This is the first requirement and there is nothing that Musk can do about it. Then, they could either take the route of ganging up together against Tesla by creating incompatible industry standards, or Tesla could charge to the rescue by opening up its ecosystem and licensing its tech.

I agree. It has been pure speculation since the IPO.

The only thing I see that Tesla has that can't be built cheaper is the data their cars have collected to be self driving. By their sheer leadership and number of cars collecting data, nobody is close.

I don't know how much of the collected data they save to model the roads and potential conditions, but my guess is they didn't just piss it away. Is it all on server farms somewhere? That all has to be good for building AI to drive the autos... but I'm not a "big data guy" so I have no idea the extent, value, etc...
