Dipy I think INTC has no choice. This paradigm shift with the sub-1000 computers is a very real concern for INTC. The cover of last month's BYTE magazine had the picture of a "disposable PC" on it and the word "churn" mentioned.

These information appliances are for real and they're here. My guess is that INTC has to use something other than an x86 to run these but I'm not an expert and I won't pretend to know. LSI has their MIPS guns loaded and blasting away with years of development and MPU cores. And the trick is it is not just the MPU that INTC needs but a lot of other peripheral stuff as well and a way to connect them. LSI does look good here. But I would never count out a company as paranoid as INTC! Or as rich as INTC! Or as R&D intensive! If need be they might just buy out some smaller companies if they really wanted to. Anyway ...

You don't stand on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't tug on the mask of the old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with...Intel. Not exactly perfect Jim Croce, but you should get the message.
