But it will always be insane to have a large country on Russia’s border join NATO. It’s been tried, in recent history - when Hitler occupied most of Eastern Europe and divided with Stalin the Baltics and Poland. That having been done, the USSR and Germany were facing each other across a long thin line. From that moment on, war was inevitable - regardless of any non-aggression treaties. Each side knew that the other side would be tempted to “surprise” - and afraid of being surprised. So far, the notion of absorbing Ukraine into nato is the worst idea of this century - with Obama’s “Iran Deal” being the closest competition. I’m saying “so far” because the century is still young, only in its early 20’s.

We saw USA response when Cuba acted with ussr to install rockets with atomic bombs. Kennedy told Nikita Khrushchev that it would be war. USA blockaded ships from landing. Getting all whiney when Russia says the same to USA over Ukraine is silly. The situation is not much different from Ireland for the Irish. Scotland for the Scottish. England for the English. Quebec for the Quebecois. In the west it's dealt with by referenda not attack as Ukraine with USA and UK and NATO help are doing to Russians in the Eastern provinces. Simple answer to that is some voting for the local yokels. Mqurice
