Also, I don't think anything is free or should be. There needs to be a price, everyone receiving a free education must give something back later; some sort of service (not necessarily military.)
Wouldn't it be fair to say that most people give back by being productive tax paying members of society?

As for some sort of mandatory military or equivalent service ... I am all for it but for a different reason. It takes young people out of their (often too cozy) environment, teaches them respect and teamwork

I have heard that all my life. The society should provide free education to the people because research shows it gets its money back many fold in increased production and decreased crime.

And I would a much healthier society and democracy.

That is, it is in societies best interest to provide free public education.

We know it is important for K though 12, what is the logic in stopping there!!??

Let me give you a way to think about this- in Germany, Norway and many other countries, college is free- even to non-German citizens (even to 'Murricans!). Why you ask? Because Germany and Norway came to realize that people who went to college often stayed -50% of the non-Germans remained in Germany- and contributed to their GDP. So the "giving back" thing comes from having more productive citizens- it's the best giving back one can have- otherwise you end up with a nation of ignorant bumpkins and some of those want to elect an ignorant bumpkin like Trump to make them feel better about their ignorant, bumpkinass selves.

So there's that.
