I always thought there was a huge loss is transporting electricity through these wires especially over a large distance (over 1000 miles). Apparently technology has gotten better and now there is at most a 10% loss.

I was always an advocate of using NG and the current pipelines in place (especially to the homes) and generate electricity on demand using fuel cells. The most efficient fuel cells are 70% (when you capture the heat).

Natural gas power plants are at most 60% efficient and when you transport that electricity you lose 10%.

So, it still appears that NG used in Fuel Cells on demand at the home is still the most efficient unless you use solar.

In my city there are good number of foodbanks and similar organizations.

People are not familiar with growing food.

Yes, a lot of "wasted" space but what happens if repairs to powerlines become necessary?
Anything below them gets destroyed.

The more I think about this its pure pie in the sky Bernie.

To my understanding , around here at least, the land is privately held. The power company has a surface use agreement to erect their structures. Cell towers the same. The land is not just there for the taking.

So now you want the gov't to teach people to garden? I think they have more pressing matters to attend to. I think anyone who has an interest in growing their own veggies is doing it.

My wife and I have been driving around this area for 45 years now. Admiring rural gardens and yards. One can see when a place changes hands and how some of these lovely yards and gardens go to shit. Fewer people have an interest in horticulture on a meaningful scale imo. Its a lot of work and tending and cuts into recreation time as most don't consider it recreation.
