russell, I have no doubt that to get to the Presidency requires more from a person than most people are willing to give. The worst aspect of running for office is the constant requirement for money to finance campaigns, which is where most people begin to allow their ideals and beliefs to be compromised. I don't offer any ready solution, because I don't at all think we should expect TV and radio stations to air commercials for free.

There is currently one US Senate candidate who is taking ZERO PAC (political action committee) money. This is (current) US Rep Linda Smith (R-Washington State). Her campaign is being financed soley by individual contributors. In fact, I've heard that the Republican National Committee won't endorse her because she has repeatedly called for campaign finance reform. Newt Gingrich doesn't like her either, for the same reason. Linda has personally witnessed Tobacco lobbyists passing out checks right on the floor of the House of Representatives just prior to an anti-tobacco vote. Prior to passing out the checks, the bill was going to pass. After the checks were passed out, necessary support went away, and the bill failed. Is this how the founding fathers envisioned our country would be run?
