You have to look at what the individuals running say is their position. The individuals will eventually form the party position which may start out defensive (i.e. "let the States decide") where it is easier to erode rights at the state level then when they get power, then can hope to make it illegal at the national level.

Think of it as gun control in reverse.... where we have the strongest gun laws in the blue states and still have the most dangerous cities since the criminals "they" refuse to keep in jail don't care about following all the rules.

Here in CA, the DNC will put dark money into the most conservative, far right candidate so their frontrunners will have an easy time in the general elections. Since 2000, I think the only time this failed is when Arnold the Governator's name recognition was so large that they couldn't spend enough to beat him.

Not if they want to get support from the inland blue part of the state
Abortion is legal in California. A GOP politician in California doesn't need to want to change that.
As I wrote, I know people in leadership positions (church leaders usually) who say this is a single issue requirement for their politicians.

I also know some who lead different churches who are strong Democrats... I guess they have different versions of their holy books, like Pelosi.

For example, the SF Catholic diocese seems to have decided it is more important to let in more illegal people into the sanctuary city of SF to fill collection baskets than it is for Pelosi to follow their rules and reject abortion to get communion.
