Yeah, my late father's proudest achievement after raising us kids was his service where he said he learned to grow up there... sadly, the service back then also taught smoking and drinking to handle stress... I'm not sure that is different now as I am too far removed from recovery meetings with 34 years sober... but back when I got sober, a very large percentage came from the military so my generation had as much problems with substance abuse as my father's.

the teachings provided last a lifetime and should be applauded not derided

It's not so much that there is a problem as it seems like all the veterans I meet seem to talk and think alike. It's like a cult.
