Quincy,

that was my thoughts exactly, when everyone was making such a big deal about 3G.

I think the NC type terminals will soon be everywhere, kind of like the payphones of today. Slide a credit card through and you pay xxcents per minute. If you want to transfer data, just plug in your laptop, palmtop, or whatever is state of the art by that time.

a cell phone may not even be necessary on the plane, because there will be something right behind the seat in front of you.

I may be wrong but it is still so far down the road, and I am no Gilder.

Ramsey

Quincy!
You asked
"General question for Raymond and Tero:
Am I understanding ETSI correctly? It appears they don't want to use the GSM MAP protocol
and instead want to use DECT on the voice side of UTRA. What's the difference?"

The backwardcompability they talk about is the GSM-MAP.This signalling is used to signal between Them Mobile switching centers,Home location
registers and other GSM-nodes.So in the W-CDMA they will like to keep
this interfaces as untouched as possible. When you go out on the public
network you can use different interfaces. The most common one is ISUP
(ISDN User Part) but different countrys uses different interfaces. This userpart lies on the top of SS7(CCITT7 in the rest of the world).GSM
MAP is also on the top of SS7.On the ISUP connection the speech connection is set up.GSM-MAP is not setting up any speech connection
it is just a bearer of information. The fight between CDMA-one and
WCDMA about backwardcompability is basically about the MAP-protocol.
It is very difficult to make the 3:rd generation compatible both
to GSM and the American IS-41(The MAP-protocol used by CDMA-one,
AMPS and AMPS-TDMA.
DECT is something else.It has nothing to do with GSM or WCDMA.It is
the european standard for radio in the local loop.It is mostly used
indoors replacing a normal businessphone. This standard was basically
a Ericsson invention which later become a European standard WITHOUT
ANY EXPENSIVE LICENCING PROCEDURE.
