The response should be "My, what a strange choice....but OK, go ahead, live and let live". The reaction to someone trying to live as a gender that they are not should not be celebration, award and acclaim for their strong self expression. Being an oddball should be generally frowned on and grudgingly accepted. The left seems to think just being different in and of itself is brave and strong and admirable, without considering the way in which the person has choses to be different. It's like somone decided only to walk backwards, because "that's their real self", and the left will give them an award and a trophy, rather than think - "OK, but what an idiot....." --- Here's what I find extremely confusing. This idea that some man thinks "the real me" is a woman perhaps made logical sense in the 1950's, when men worked and built and farted and dominated society and women were nurturing and beauty conscious and home makers and obedient (in the movies at least), and there was a CLEAR DISTINCTION between the male and female roles. Since the 1960's sexual revolution and women's entrance in politics and the major white collar professions and entrance into the military, the entire idea of a social distinction (as opposed to biological distinction) between the sexes has blurred. So this man who thinks he's a woman. Why isn't he an effeminate man? A woman can be an astronaut, a highly opinionated interrupter of everyone, and possess all the "traditionally male" charcteristics, and still be a woman. Why is one of these butch agressive strong willed dominant women a woman, while another is a biological woman who thinks she's a man? What in the world is the difference between those two people, other than the second for some reason (which I don't understand one bit) says "I'm a man". They act the same, look the same, and one is a woman while the other is a biological woman who identifies as a man. The second one is the one that confuses me - why does she need to be considered a man if she can just as easily be a masculine woman? It gets more confusing the more genders you wanna discuss.....we got one trans person in our life regularly. The person is awesome. I've never discussed this topic with this person, because there has never been a need, and I don't think anyone has the answer. I do get how the pronouns are confusing though, because this clearly born biological male is living as a woman (I think), with little breasts, but the person is NOT attractive, the person is just..........really odd looking. But the personality of the person is so pleasant that the person's gender situation has never mattered.
