We certainly don't want to encourage kids to make "oddball" choices just because they want to be different and it will give them some attention or perhaps hurt their parents. That might be why "we" as a society are trying to be more accepting, but like many things, it may have backfired.

If I say screw what my genetics say, "I'm a CAL Falcon" and "I want to jump off this building to go feed the famous new chicks some meat." They will lock me up before I hurt myself.

But if as you say a biological male that went through puberty to have big muscles but not enough skill to dominate in male sports, decides he's a female and wants to beat up or otherwise dominate "normal" females who've worked all their lives to get to the top of their sports, a large part of society is fine with that.

MRI imaging has shown that in most gays and transgenders the portion of their brain that deals with sexual orientation is similar to that of the opposite sex. In other words, this is not a matter of choice. If someone was born with sever nose deformation or a cleft lip, you would not question them having an operation for it. But this rubs people the wrong. In part because they can't see the brain structure and do not know about it. And in part because the person is not able to get a brain surgery and fix their brain so ends up "fixing" the rest of their body.

Regardless, I don't see why it should be ok to discriminate against people who are born differently.
