Holly, for the last 17 years, the media has only slanted things one way, and that's towards their own biases, which are decidedly left-wing. They've fawned and fallen all over themselves to give Bill has much positive coverage wherever possible; that is, until the Drudge Report released the story of the Tripp tapes of Lewinsky. At that point the media (Time had sat on the story for six months, as we all now know) collectively realized that if they didn't give the story some airtime, they risked looking like inept co-conspirators -- plus, the story had SEX, LIES, & AUDIOTAPE in it, which was really far too good to pass up. Their ratings would soar! The public would be glued to their radios, newspapers, and TVs, and they would want more and more and more.

As for Bill -- well, business is business, and sometimes one must put money before politics. Maybe somehow Bill could survive, and once the initial shock wore off, the media themselves could again rally around their guy, maybe do some attack jobs on the obvious enemy, Kenneth Starr, that evil enemy of democracy! How dare him investigate possible wrong-doing by Bill! They could turn on Monica, and make her appear to be a dull-witted floosy, who really only dreamed this whole sordid affair up.

So, the script has played well so far. The media has had a fixated public, and now all that remains is to put back together the good-guy image of the media's all-time favorite President, William Jefferson Blythe Clinton.
