So, what are individuals focused on rather than buying stocks where the dividend is the thesis?

When I was more interested in dividends I bought using the same criteria as I do now - buy growth. But I bought growth stocks that were dividend-payers. Companies like MSFT, KLAC, AAPL, CMI, etc.,. Plenty of companies with double-digit earnings and revenue growth that pay dividends.

If I felt I needed to raise my overall yield I did it by buying what I used to call my sluggards - some of which were on this list. MO, VZ, utes, etc, to balance it out. But I always wanted at least some growth companies.

I also had some REITs and BDCs

The biggest change when I switched to more of a growth focus was getting rid of the sluggards.

I have VZ in almost every income based portfolio I manage. It's going to stay there too.

I'm not expecting much in the area of capital gains, but the income is steady and reliable. VZ also adds ballast when the market is correcting, I needed some stocks like that.

In my personal portfolio VZ is at break even after all the time I've held it. I thought that was funny, to have price at my cost basis when its not a new holding. So, I guess I'm up based on all of the dividends that have been paid.

I think I'll add a little more the end of this month.

I get why others wish to avoid it and I support their decision. I'm going to keep mine.

Any snow up there? Sunny and 60* here. The Missus and I are heading down to Myrtle Beach tomorrow for a few days. It's beach season! Ha!

RE: So, what are individuals focused on rather than buying stocks where the dividend is the thesis? - is it Bonds? (something I've never purchased in the past...)

Not a fan of bond funds other than short term. I have spent the last year diversifying my portfolio using hard assets, market neutral, long/short funds, commodities, crypto and international exposure. I feel just diversification amongst stock sectors isn't really much diversification. Also using funds that protect downside such as buffered funds and funds that use put options.
