Citibank is a progressive retail institution so this doesn't surprise me. Once a client is tied in so much, very reluctant to change so having this as a loss leader makes alot of sense to me.

At Mellon Bank in Pgh, I believe they charge $9.95 for on-line banking while Bank By Phone is $3.50 to $3.95. In the final analysis, banking is a commodity business so the more you tie the customer in, the more chance you have of keeping them. With on-line banking including loans and ATMs, the brick and morter advantage will slowly dwindle. I for one have absolutely no allegience to any one bank and will do business with whoever and whatever can provide me with the services I need at the lowest cost.

>>>However, the service is now FREE where I bank -- Citibank.

I also use Citibank. What they don't charge for FREE on line banking is made up in some hidden costs somewhere else. Most people bank for convenience and don't look at bank fees.

Don't look now, but Citibank is not a Checkfree customer. They are one of the very few banks that are capable of, and actually do, their own bill payment (although I believe they lose a lot of money doing it). I suggest you switch to the Chase Bank, a big supporter of Checkfree, and also a bank which doesn't charge bank customers anything for the service.(Others take note)
