Mike, Don't you find it a bit strange that we had better and more capable and perhaps more honorable people in public office before we sought to invade every corner of their privacy? I think it's time for me to once again haul out my old Watergate post on the Rambi thread of a few months back: exchange2000.com Surely you must agree that the media failed to "invade" Reagan's privacy with respect to his physical and mental fitness. To me, that is far more alarming than digging into who greased whose palm or who boinked whom. Holly

There are plenty of good people willing to enter office and deal with those difficulties. I don't buy the fact that it keeps so many wonderful people from public office. That's another tired cliche' the media use to justify behavior which is plain wrong. I disagree, as you know. I think a great many people who might otherwise choose public service decide against it. Even if no one ever turns up a thing on you, you KNOW they'll be trying for as long as you're in the spotlight. And it's not only you: they'll go after your family and friends, too. It must be unbelievably stressful. I'd guess that as much as one expects it, and tries to prepare, it must be shocking.
