Holly, the media have been carefully trying to paint Reagan as a person who was losing his faculties ever since he went public with his terrible disease.

There is no proof whatsoever that Reagan suffered Alziemers while he was in office.

Talk about crucifying a man with not one shred of evidence.

The media did invade Reagans every nook and cranny while he was in office. Remember Iran Contra? Remember the hoopla over his joking about bombing the Soviet Union, when he thought he was off camera. Boy did they play that one to the hilt! Remember his sick wife who loved astrology? Remember his daughter who fought with him?

If Reagan did a tenth of what Clinton has done. Especially the Filegate mess. The media would have demanded impeachment long ago.

Now I really must go because the X files is on. I love that show!

Michael

>>Surely you must agree that the media failed to "invade" Reagan's privacy with respect to his physical and mental fitness.

Surely you are kidding. The NYT and many others ran numerous articles and editorials about their "concern" and the WH released the records. Any search will reveal that what I am telling you is true.

The first debate in '84 reflected an overbriefed man. That same man easily won the second encounter. (What was very unusual is that RR debated Mondale at all, no President before who was leading had ever debated his challenger because there is little upside to be gained. RR, however, felt it was important for democracy.)

The Dems tried to make that a big issue in 1984 and found out 49 states did not agree. (actually 50, Mondale's campaign manager later admitted that they sleighted the 3000 votes needed to win MN, they did not want RR to have a shutout). Still, RR won the greatest landslide ever without resorting to negative campaigning.
